Benson has had a watching brief at both Hitchin Town and Barnet to date, but said: “I’m happy with what I’ve got out of pre-season so far.

“It’s only the last few days I’ve had to step out with a slight knock, but as far as all the running in Portugal, I didn’t miss a day out there.

“We’ve got another friendly coming up, so hopefully I’ll play in that one.”

Hatters travel to East Thurrock tonight, with prices £10 adults, £5 concessions, £2 children.

Along with Benson, none of Jonathan Smith, Luke Guttridge, Andy Parry and Curtley Williams have featured yet as boss John Still added: “We haven’t had to push Benno to play, we haven’t had to push Smudge to play, they’re okay, another few days for them, it’s nothing terrible.

“Even Gutts. This week we’re going to push him on, so he’ll get a game in at least before the season starts.

“He can do all the running, so he’s not behind on fitness, just with the ball.”

Town then host Royal Antwerp on Saturday and entertain Colchester United on Tuesday.

The club are also sending an XI to Bedford Town on Saturday and St Neots on Wednesday.
