Luton’s out of contract players will be asked to do their bit to ensure the club remains a Championship outfit this season, even if they aren’t there to reap the benefits afterwards, according to CEO Gary Sweet.

Luke Berry, Danny Hylton, Callum McManaman, Glen Rea, Elliot Lee and Marek Stech will all be free agents this summer, along with Lloyd Jones and Jake Jervis, while Luton also have options on Donervon Daniels, Jacob Butterfield and Kazenga LuaLua, who signed 12 month contracts in the summer.

The deals are due to run out next month, but with the season potentially restarting then and carrying on well into July after the government recently gave the green light for professional football to begin again, Sweet said: “There's always the month of July, in a normal situation, and these are some of the issues we come across, where at the moment, the transfer market would be open at the moment, so we’d be able to trade, we can’t do that until the season is finished.

“So in July if a player whose contract is out in June, if he hasn’t found another club by July they we have to pay him July as well as a severance month.

“In this situation we’ve got to pay all players who are leaving the month of July, which is an additional sum of course.

“So we are going to ask them if they are willing to play and hope they do, to keep the squad together as much as anything else.

"Of course, we wont be able to re-sign any new players at that time either, so July could be an interesting month.”
