Town’s new Diamond is backed to sparkle

HATTERS assistant boss Alan Neilson has backed new signing Aaron O’Connor to be a hit at Kenilworth Road, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 27-year-old signed on the dotted line from Rushden & Diamonds on Monday, after scoring 14 goals in 37 appearances at Nene Park last season.

O’Connor, who won a host of awards at Rushden, including Supporters Player Of The Year, penned a two-year deal and will soon be exciting Hatters fans according to Neilson.

He said: “All the players we get we do background checks.

“I’ve seen a lot of games when we played against them, also I’ve gone to a lot of scouting games.

“He’s always one you put a tick against. He’s powerful, quick, hard working.

“He’s scored goals in his last two years and is at that age now where he’s experienced.

“He’s 27, he was captain at Rushden last year, so he has leadership qualities and he’s a good lad as well.

“He’s the type of player that every football club wants.

“He’s got ability and works hard for himself and the team.”
