McGeehan believes EFL are making a mockery of Trophy

The league released the new format recently, but since then the likes of Manchester City and Spurs to name just two, have declined the chance to feature.

McGeehan, who was with Chelsea as a youngster and then Norwich City before moving to Luton last season, doesn’t understand why more Premier League teams aren’t on board with the venture though.

He said: “I don’t think it’s the worst idea ever and it could be all right, but there’s been a few of them pulling out now.

“I don’t understand what the reason behind that is, because it’s a tournament for U21 teams which would be good for them to play against first teams, to see what it’s actually like, because it’s miles apart.

“I’ve seen Tottenham and Man United have pulled out too and it strikes me as odd as it seems like the perfect thing for teams.

“I don’t think they’re helping as that tournament would be good for U21s to get a good gauge as long as everyone does it properly, but it doesn’t seem they’re going to.

“It seems like its been badly organised from the get go, as the lads have thought it’s been a bit weird.”

McGeehan wasn’t sure why the competition, that Hatters famously won the back in 2009, was changed in the first place either, adding: “The JPT is quite a big competition for some people.

“Josh (McQuoid) has won it, he’s got the shirt on the wall and it’s a proud moment for people who can get into the final and play at Wembley.

“I think they’re making a bit of a mockery of it, but it’s not my place to say.”
