McGeehan named Football League Young Player of the Month

With three goals in five matches, McGeehan’s form helped the Hatters claim 10 points, as the 20-year-old notched a superb long range winner at Wycombe, a penalty against Hartlepool and a header at York – the Town’s first goal at Bootham Crescent in over 10 hours, taking his tally to the season to 12.

Speaking about the prize, McGeehan said: “I am really privileged and happy to have won the award. It is a nice bit of recognition for me.

Meanwhile, boss Nathan Jones felt it was a deserved honour for the youngster, saying: “Since I’ve come in he has been fantastic. He has contributed some really important goals as he has done all season and he’s the type of player we want here.

“He’s got a fantastic haul at the minute, 12 goals, that’s no mean feat, but he’s a player I’ve been very impressed with since I’ve been here.

“His desire to learn, his ability and his workrate have been superb and just rewards for the work he puts in and the quality he’s shown.

Commenting on McGeehan’s award, David Wetherall, Head of Youth Development at The Football League, said: “Cameron has been in excellent form for Luton this season and despite being just 20 years of age, he is already proving himself as an important first team player.

“McGeehan’s performances in February have been impressive and Luton will no doubt be hoping he can maintain his goal scoring form between now and the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, Jones is hoping that it’s not just McGeehan who comes to the fore under his stewardship at Kenilworth Road, adding: “We want to get the best out of all of our players, as coaches, managers, as staff, I demand that from everyone.

“That’s why we bring good people in and want good people at the football club.

“When a new manager comes in, different people flourish, Olly Lee is one of those, Jack Marriott is continuing his good form.

“But what we want is all our squad, all our players that we class as our first team to be right at it and improve daily.

“Age is no barrier for development. A lot of the players are responding to what we’re asking of them and Cameron is responding to that.”
