McGeehan takes no joy in drawing level with Marriott
Hatters goalscorer Cameron McGeehan could take little solace from his 13th goal of the season after Town were beaten late on by Barnet on Easter Monday.
The 20-year-old drew level with Jack Marriott at the top of the scoring charts for Luton by hammering home from close range with five minutes remaining.
However, just as Luton looked like they could go on to win, captain Scott Cuthbert gave away a penalty for handball that John Akinde tucked away.
McGeehan said: “Jack’s had a good run, he caught me up, we have a good laugh about it, but it’s not at the front of my mind at the minute, because of the state of the game.
“It’s nice to keep pressure on each other and keep pushing each other on, but I’m just gutted we conceded late on.
“We’ve done it too many times this season, killed ourselves as we were on a pretty good run at the minute and that puts us back down the table.
“It’s sloppy defending for both goals which has cost us as we were right on top of them.
“Then we scored and looked like we were going to nick it. A draw would have been not bad, but obviously a loss is devastating.”
On the goal, which saw McGeehan blast into the roof of the net from all of a yard out after keeper Graham Stack failed to hold Cuthbert’s header, he continued: “It was a good header from Cuths and a good ball from Greeny (Danny Green).
“I’ve had a bit of a trademark this season of arriving at the right time and that’s what I’ll look to do for the rest of the season.
“I think the keeper spilled it and I just volleyed it in.
“It was coming, we were throwing good balls into the box, probably could have nicked another one, but it wasn’t to be and we have to move on.”
Hatters weren’t without their chances in the final frantic moments either, as Green raced away, but trying an audacious chip, couldn’t find the target.
McGeehan said: “It was really frustrating, Greeny had a good chance at the end and I probably expect him to do a bit better because of his quality that he’s got.
“But we pushed hard and sometimes you get caught out because you’re pushing for it, so maybe that happened.”
