Rovers forced to pay the penalty

Barton’s magnificent winning streak was ended by a narrow defeat away to Bedfont Town on Wednesday night.

There were ominous signs that it wasn’t going to be Rovers’ night with Ricky Case missing two gilt edged chances within the first five minutes.

First he sent a lob over with just the keeper to beat, before from an excellent cut-back by Russell Bull saw him scuff a shot and make it easy for goalkeeper Gary Ross.

There was no quarter asked or given by both sides but although Richard Wilmot was the busier keeper Bedfont didn’t seriously threaten, while the only threat from Barton were some splendid forays upfield by full back Sam Spencer.

Manager Dan Kennoy was forced to make changes and at the break he swapped the two Russell’s, Preston for Bull.

George Brinkman moved infield and Barton had a purple patch but the final ball let them down.

They insisted on cross balls only to find that goalkeeper Gary Ross was in outstanding form and collected everything, before Ricky Case came on for Andre Maltay.

Rovers had a stroke of good fortune when Gavin Hart looked to have scored, but a magnificent goal-line clearance by Liam McDevitt saved the day.

Just when it looked like Barton would escape with a draw, Andrew Iwedunio, for the second time in a week, gave away a needless penalty with seven minutes remaining.

Wayne O’Sullivan stepped forward and although Wilmot guessed correctly it went underneath his body.

Now Barton woke up and came at Bedfont and they were hanging on at the end, but couldn’t find a way through.

Rovers travel to Uxbridge this weekend.
