Rovers register first league win since August

Barton Rovers picked up their first Southern League win since August after a late Jack Keating goal secured victory at Godalming on Saturday.

The visitors were still depleted by injuries and the suspension to Jason Blackett, so travelled with a youthful squad, who certainly did not disappoint.

Godalming came out of the traps the strongest early on and had a couple of early half chances that called keeper Kyle Forster into action.

Elliot Bailey had the best early opportunity for Rovers only to fire wide of the mark.

The deadlock was broken on 31 minutes though when Mazzone’s cross shot sailed over Forster on 31 minutes and into the net.

There was controversy surrounding the goal, with a home forward appearing offside, but it was allowed to stand.

Rovers’ injury list grew just before half time as the lively Bailey was forced off after an innocuous challenge saw him need to leave the field.

However, in the second period, Kev Kilroy’s speculative effort sailed just over before youngster Ashton Grant netted his first senior goal for the club with a calm finish from 15 yards.

Barton pushed on for the winner and it came after 80 minutes when Jack Keating fired home a rocket of a shot from Kilroy’s cross.

Tom Peveral could have extended the lead late on but home keeper Richard Ossai saved well.

The result saw Barton climb to 13th in the table and they travelled to Hanwell Town last night, visit Kings Langley on Saturday and then entertain Arlesey Town next Tuesday.
