Rovers slip to narrow Ashford defeat

BARTON Rovers slipped to their fifth consecutive away Zamaretto League Division One Central defeat of the season with a 1-0 reverse at Ashford Town on Tuesday night.

Ashford threatened in the first half as Billy Jeffries headed over, but the visitors put in a good defensive shift and could have scored themselves, as Desi Djuroke went close.

On the resumption, Ashford were again in the ascendency and piled on the pressure as Jeffries thundered a header against the crossbar.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute as a ricochet led to Jamie Lawrence rifling home.

Despite falling behind, Rovers appeared invigorated as both Lee Wilson and Ricky Case produced enterprising performances, while centre-back Richard Butler was named man of the match.

Barton had been victorious on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Maldon & Tiptree in the FA Trophy thanks to goals from Bilal Hassan, Tommy Peverall and Case.

Rovers entertain Marlow this weekend.
