Sweet: Hatters boss Jones is a huge draw for new signings

Hatters boss Nathan Jones has been a big pull when attracting new signings to the club according to chief executive Gary Sweet.

Town have made six additions so far this summer, with all of them arriving from a higher level, including Christian Walton and Glen Rea from Championship side Brighton.

Sweet believes they have been swayed by the Town chief’s undoubted passion for the game too, saying: “He is a draw, he’s not had a huge amount of experience as a manager, but he’s a draw.

“We as Luton fans, we see his enthusiasm so when you talk to him one-on-one, it comes out. If you’re a player and you’re being interviewed by Nathan Jones, then you know this club is going places, and he’s got a very, very clear vision.

“That’s what players want, they want a clear vision, want to know what their job is, where the club’s going, what they’re going to do to succeed and need to do too.”

Sweet hasn’t had any say in the club’s transfer dealings since the end of the campaign, and believes the club is in good hands under Jones and his management team, including Paul Hart and Mick Harford.

He continued: “We’ve just got complete faith in not just Nathan but the coaching team with Mick and Paul in particular.

“They know football inside out, they’re experienced, they’ve worked together and they’re supporting Nathan every step of the way.

“They talk every single day, right throughout the holiday, they haven’t had a break and have worked really hard.

“We’ve not signed a plethora of players necessarily, but those that we’ve signed have been hand picked.

“They’re a better quality and I think it’s more about what players we haven’t brought in, than those we have.

“We’re not just filling numbers, it’s about keeping it trim, making sure everyone’s going to be involved a lot over the season and just very, very good careful planning.

“It just fills me with a great deal of faith in what they’re doing and every single one of them has got a great character, they were really keen to join a club like Luton, really keen to get involved.

“They get the type of football Nathan wants to play, they really embrace that enthusiasm that he’s got and the ambitions he’s got from a football side which matches ours as a club.”

In recent years, Luton have brought in far more players during the close season, but Sweet knows that’s not the way Jones operates.

He said: “I think definitely under Nathan, I’m not saying it works under every manager, but under Nathan then it definitely does.

“He wants to have a trimmer squad and wants everyone involved, but everyone to have a certain level of quality, and that’s exactly the right way to go about it.

“Clearly there are risks there, with injuries and suspensions, but we’re doing this on the back of our U18s going to the quarter final of the FA Youth Cup.

“So if there’s ever a chance that we can do this as we can trim the squad down, knowing we can delve into those half a dozen development players that we’ve given contracts to since their success last year. That’s fantastic for us, fantastic for Nathan, fantastic for the pros he’s bringing in as they’re being given more playing time.”
