Triumphant Blues leave it late against Borough

A LATE barrage of goals saw Dunstable Town cut the gap to top of the table Royston Town with a 3-0 Molten Spartan SML Premier win over Broxbourne Borough on Tuesday night.

With 20 minutes remaining it had looked like the Blues would suffer their second frustrating home draw in as many games, but debutant George Brinkman, Lee Roache and Danny Hutchins were all on target to secure a vital victory.

Earlier in the game, Dunstable wasted a host of chances as they struck the bar and even conspired to miss an open goal too.

Broxbourne, who are the only team to beat Blues in a league game this season, stuck to their gameplan with admirable resilience.

Eventually the deadlock was broken on 71 minutes when Brinkman was on target, while Roache atoned for his earlier misses with a deadly finish moments later.

Broxbourne had to forsake their midfield stranglehold and committed men forward, coming close when Chris Doyle’s effort hit the crossbar.

Dunstable’s third goal had a touch of class about it, as Jonathan Cooper eluded several challenges before teeing up Hutchins to stroke home.

Blues director of football John McLoughlin said: “ It was a great debut from George Brinkman and he will be a great addition as Nathan Frater and Craig Henney are both injured.

“He has great ability and attributes and I am looking forward to seeing him enjoy his football at Dunstable.

“The back four again were outstanding and with Peter Holmes, Hutch (Danny Hutchins) and Nick Jackson back in the team, we looked very impressive going forward.

“I would like us to be more ruthless in front of goal but when all’s said and done we looked very comfortable.”

The result saw Town move up to second in the table and are now 11 points behind leaders Royston Town, with two games in hand.

Blues had been held to a 1-1 draw by Tring Athletic at Creasey Park on Saturday. The visitors went ahead on 67 minutes when Connor Waite scored, but Dean Brennan levelled late on from the penalty spot, while Town then had Lee Burgoyne sent off.

Dunstable travel to United Counties League Premier Division side Long Buckby in the second round of the FA Vase this weekend.
