Vassell likened to Hatters hot-shot Marriott

Hatters' new addition Isaac Vassell has been likened to Luton hot-shot Jack Marriott by skipper Scott Cuthbert.

The 22-year-old became Town’s seventh signing of the summer on Saturday, penning a one year contract after a successful trial spell at Kenilworth Road.

On his new team-mate, Cuthbert said: “If you were at the game against Bedford you’d have seen that he seems quite a handful, a fit, strong, powerful lad.

“He’s someone who reminds me of Jack a little bit when he first came through, that kind of impact for the last 20-25 minutes, coming on and stretching defences.

“He’s young, hungry, he’s a really good kid, came in and settled in well the first week.

“I’m delighted he got his deal and hopefully he can come in for the last couple of weeks of pre-season and get to know the lads a little bit better, sing his initiation song which we’re looking forward to.”

Marriott himself said of the latest addition: “He’s a good lad. I’ve not seen a lot of him, but played with him against Bedford.

“He’s big, he’s strong, has good hold-up play and hopefully he can bring something to the team.

Hatters boss Nathan Jones hopes that Vassell, who made 10 appearances for Plymouth earlier in his career, forges his own reputation though.

He said: “We wouldn’t want to compare him with anyone as he hasn’t been brought in to be like Jack Marriott.

“We want a different one otherwise we wouldn’t have brought him in.

“We wanted to bring in something a little bit different and it will be interesting to see how he gets on, because he’s never really had full time training, not been worked with constantly which is what he’s going to get here.

“So hopefully we can provide that and kick him on and he’ll do well for Luton.”

There are similarities between Vassell and former Town striker Andre Gray who dropped out of the league to join Hinckley United before his second coming at Luton, as he is now looking forward to the Premier League with Burnley this season.

Jones added: “I would imagine if there’s anyone they would compare him to it would be Andre Gray, but he’s not Andre Gray, he’s not anyone, he’s Isaac Vassell.

“We’d love to get him to a level where he’s in that category, but it’s early stages. Lets let him settle, lets work him with and then see where it goes.”
