Versatile Pelly could be used in a defensive role

Hatters boss Nathan Jones hasn't ruled out using Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu in a more defensive role if required.

The 23-year-old was originally a centre half when signing from Premier League West Ham in December 2013, making his debut for Town in that position.

Previous boss John Still then transformed him into an attacking midfielder, while under new chief Nathan Jones he has also played there, scoring in the 2-0 win at Mansfield recently.

However, in the latter stages of last week’s 2-1 win over Hartlepool, he was pressed into action as an emergency right back due to Stephen O’Donnell’s injury and on whether he could be asked to play there again, Jones said: “We think he’s quite versatile in where he plays.

“He was a defensive player at West Ham, we’ve used his power in attack, but he’s one that reasonably versatile and one I’m getting to know week by week and see what he can do.

“He’s a good young player for us, maybe he could fit that bill (right back), whether it’s now will be another question.”

Meanwhile, Jones is hoping Craig Mackail-Smith’s match-winner last week, his first goal in five months, will boost the striker’s confidence, adding: “Craig’s not scored as many as he would have liked or we would have liked because we know the type of player he is.

“It’s great for him to score and pleased he has because hopefully that will be a release for him.

“We’re not too worried about that though as his performance levels have been very good when he’s played for me.

“He’s given me the other side of the game and if he keeps doing that, I’m sure the opportunities will come.”
