Walton targets England U21 call-up during Hatters stay

Town's on-loan Brighton & Hove Albion keeper Christian Walton is hoping that his stint at Kenilworth Road this term will lead to another England U21 call-up.

The 20-year-old has represented his country at both U19 and U20 level, and was called into the U21s, but then lost his place after making just 10 appearances while on loan at Bury and Plymouth last year.

Walton said: “Last year was a bit of a tricky season for myself, I didn’t get as many games as I’d have liked, but to get that recognition was great for me and it’s always an honour to play for England and be involved in that set up.

“So I think from playing week in week out and doing well I’ll most definitely be on their radar.”

Walton will be the elder statesman at Kenilworth Road this term, with number two Craig King and newly-turned pro Liam Gooch the only other goalkeepers.

He continued: “It’s going to be good to work with them every day and I can hopefully bring something to them with my experience from being at Brighton and working with some top keepers there.

“I think we’ll have a good training group for the season, so I’m more than happy to pass on any experience I have and any questions they have. But I think we can all learn off each other really, as we’ll be working day in day out so it’s going to be good.”

Meanwhile, fellow summer signing Glen Rea would love the chance to represent the full Ireland squad during his time with Luton.

The 21-year-old has made a handful of appearances for the U21s, as he said: “It’s the dream, if that happens, but there’s so much hard work to go on before I can even think about that.

“I just want to establish myself here as a first team player and then who know what the future brings.”
