Gina jockeys her way into winning position

LILLEY amateur jockey Gina Andrews is aiming to complete a Point To Point Championships victory this season, writes Mike Simmonds.

Point to point racing is a form of amateur racing over jumps for hunting horses and Gina is currently leading the way in the Lady Riders Championship with 17 wins to her name.

Her next set of races are at Parham, Clifton-upon-Dunsmore and Northaw and the 19-year-old said: “I’m leading the Point To Point Championship at the moment which is really good.

“The season goes from December to June 19, and I’ve been in front for most of that, so will hopefully have plenty more rides.”

Gina was out on the track at Fakenham on Easter Monday, although not under her point to point guise, as she rode her first double under National Hunt rules and, in the process, had her claim when riding against professionals reduced to 5lb.

The jockey, from Lilley Bottom Farm, enjoyed a marvellous day’s racing, picking up two winners from her five rides.

She was victorious in the Keith Memorial Handicap Chase on 11/10 favourite Sarah’s Gift and the Fakenham Membership Novices’ Handicap Hurdle on Chicklemix.

It was fairly obvious that the teenager would become a jockey as parents Simon and Joanna were both heavily involved in racing and were jockeys too.

Sister Bridget is also making her way too and Gina, whose agent is Chris Broad Management Ltd, said: “I’ve been riding all my life.

“Both my parents were jockeys, as is my sister, while my brother is starting to get involved too.

“So it’s definitely a big part of our family life.”
