Golfer Lewton earns a European Tour place

Former South Beds GC member set for an exciting 2011

FORMER South Beds Golf Club member Steve Lewton will spend this year globetrotting the world as part of the European Tour after qualifying for the prestigious tournament, writes Mike Simmonds.

In December, Lewton won the second qualifying stage at Arcos Gardens in Spain to move on to the final qualifying stage at the PGA Catalunya Resort.

With just 30 European tour cards to be won, the pressure was on, but Lewton finished 19th, pocketing just under $3,000 dollars.

The 27-year-old, pictured right, had to come through 108 holes of gruelling golf, but a first round 63 (seven under), saw him lead the group of over 150 competitors.

He then played steadily through the rounds, recording 72, 66, 70, 72 and 74 to finish 11 under and tie for 19th place, securing his spot on the European Tour.

Lewton said: “It was a pretty good achievement as only the top 30 get through, so a lot of the hard work I have done has paid off.”
