KARATE: Jordan becomes Euro champion

Luton’s Jordan Thomas has become the -67kg Senior European Karate Champion.

The 22-year-old former St Margaret of Scotland Primary School pupil, was up against Azerbaijan opponent Aliyev Niyazi in the final and as expected, it proved to be a very tactical and close bout.

Thomas, who trains Kaizen Karate Federation at Denbigh High School, scored first with a counter punch, but his opponent drew level at 1-1. .

In line with the rules in the event of a draw, throughout the match, Thomas was better tactically and committed to more attacks therefore won the bout, and the title, on a 3-2 decision.

Thomas is now the English Karate Federation’s first Senior European champion and England’s second over a 14-year span, joining his father Willie as a Senior European Champion.
