Luton AC impress in Chiltern fixture

Luton AC athletes contested the second Chiltern Cross-Country League fixture on Saturday with the Senior men expected to retain the overall lead in Division One.

They started promisingly with John McDonnell and Daniel Woodgate leading out a field of over 300 runners round the first of three 3km laps at Shuttleworth College.

On the second lap, three runners broke away with Woodgate leading from Matt Bergin of Bedford & County AC and McDonnell. Luton’s team hopes took a massive blow when Tom Reilly failed to start after twisting an ankle warming up and Tom Mead dropped out after one lap feeling the effects of a recent virus.

McDonnell eased himself into the lead to come home 18 seconds clear of Bergin with Woodgate third.

After a lengthy period of injury, McDonnell is in good shape to challenge for a place in the British U23 team at the European Cross-Country event in Hungary on December 9. The trials take place in Liverpool in two weeks’ time and he and Woodgate will be looking for a top five place to qualify.
