Luton Fliers secure title

G-CASINO Luton Fliers Basketball Club won the Herts Premier League Division One title last week with a home victory against Herts Warriors.

The victory, in their final game of the season, meant that they didn’t need the tie-break over Cambridge Cats, who had also lost to Genting Raiders the previous weekend. Fliers finished on 14 wins and two losses with Cats in second place on 13 wins and three defeats as they brought the title back to Luton after a two-year absence.

Coach David Rossington said: “I was pleased with the on-court efforts of the team, who could not train as much as they would have liked because of work commitments.

“It was particularly pleasing to have a defence which allowed nearly 300 points less than the next best team over the season.”

Top scorers on the day were Ali Miller with 23, Rafe Abrook, 21, and Neil Mackay, 14. Joint top scorers for the season were Miller and Abrook, who both averaged 16 points per game.

Luton now enter the play-off finals against eighth-placed team Stevenage tonight at Putteridge Sports Centre and, if successful, they will play the winners of Herts Warriors versus Ware Jokers, again at home, on Friday, April 20.
