Luton AC youngster qualifies for European Champs
LUTON Athletic Club’s John McDonnell ran the race of his life at Liverpool on Saturday to win the European U20 cross-country trial, writes Mike Simmonds.
The 19-year-old chased down Aldershot’s Johnny Hay on the final lap for a three-second victory at Sefton Park and earn automatic selection for the Spar European Championships at Albufeira, Portugal on December 12.
A delighted McDonnell said: “I was really surprised to win as although I want to win every race, I hadn’t expected to do so.”
