Hard to keep up with Mr Jones’ luxurious cars
The Albion Garage in High Street North, Dunstable, was founded by Alfred Jones who is renowned for being one of the first people to own a motor car in Dunstable.
His garage was on the corner of Tavistock Street, where the Tesco Express petrol station and supermarket now stand. The photo, sent to the Gazette by Alfred’s niece, Mrs Betty Warren, shows workers in the Albion yard in the early 1900s.
Mr Jones went on to greatly expand his business. A town directory for 1924 contains a full-page advertisement for Alfred Jones and Co, automobile engineers, of Albion Works, Dunstable, (tel Dunstable 52). The firm had luxurious vehicles for hire and specialised in Sunbeam, Talbot and Rhode cars. A photo of Alfred Jones, used in Yesteryear some years ago, showed him driving a 1903 Panhard et Levassor car.
