With Luton now tied in second placed with Eton Manor, who have played two matches less, director of rugby Paul Allen is delighted with how things are shaping up.

He said: “When we click I have no doubt we could contend in the league above, but to get there is still a tough ask.

“The pressure is on Westcliff and Eton Manor with them not being able to play their last couple of games, but we have to have a 100 per cent finish and then things get interesting.”

Luton raced into a 14-0 lead inside 11 minutes through tries from Jake Hobbs and Michael Weston.

However, Woodford responded well for the rest of the second half, scoring a converted try and penalty before half time to leave the score at 14-10 at half time.

Allen continued: “Leading up to half time we lost the plot and allowed Woodford to get some control through their impressive pack, to be honest some strong words at half time refocussed the lads and the second half was very impressive.”

Whatever was said at half time worked as Luton scored seven tries in the second half.

Tom Mahendran and Steve Ellis touched down, there were two more for Weston and a hat-trick for Chris Talanoa as Luton romped to a 59-10 victory.

Allen added: “Michael Weston had another outstanding performance and caused havoc when he had the ball.

“Our Kiwi contingent of Robbie Smith, Chris Talanoa and Doug Fluker are blending in really well with our local lads. They are bringing experience and some magical touches.”

Luton’s next match in London One North is away to Tabard on March 1.
