LDSC debutant Gary Lankester, playing at fifth string, kicked off proceedings against Mark Pinnock.

The first half of the opening game was close before Pinnock reeled off eight consecutive points to triumph and then went on to comfortably win 3-0.

On the second court, LDSC fourth string Matt Carey squared off against Simon Green in what was a carbon copy of the fifth string match as Green’s superior fitness told. With LDSC 2-0 down, the pressure was on those higher up the order and the third string match between Craig Basham and Alberto Elfasi was filled with controversy.

Basham had the upper hand, but his opponent walked off the court at the beginning of the third game after a decision went against him and, as he refused to return, he forfeited.

The second string match went LDSC’s way as Phil Jenkins wasted little time in sealing a 3-0 victory against Jake Smith.
