Team Luton rack up a century of medals

Team Luton swimmers picked up more than 120 medals at this year’s Bedfordshire County Championships, which were held at Luton’s Inspire Sports Village.

The club finished second in the county as their 60 plus strong team amassed 40 gold medals, 42 silvers and 46 bronzes as more than 20 swimmers took medals with Laila Gilbert, Rhys Davidson, Abbie Barnwell, Lauren Young, Nathan Swift and Chantel Smith winning in excess of 10 each.

In the 10/11 year age group, Laila Gilbert (11) won silver medals in the 50m and 200m breaststroke with times of 44.86secs and 3.38.03mins.

Gilbert also won bronze in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and the 200m individual medley (IM).

Maisie Hamilton (11) won medals in all the butterfly events, gold in the 200m (3.41.48mins) silver in the 100m (1.37.11mins) and bronze in the 50m.

Rhys Davison (11) won gold in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 200m IM and 400m freestyle, plus silver in the 50m, 200m breaststroke and 200m freestyle and bronze medals in the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

Other swimmers in this age group were Anthony Blower, Ben Cornforth, Declan Beel, Freya Kiernan, Hannah Armstrong, Ismail Savage, Jacob Hayhurst, Jennifer Brooks, Kirstan Bashford, Lauren Donnelly, Malachi Gilbert, Menna Walmsley, Nyles Whyte and Susana Opoku-Gyamfi.

In the 12-year-old age group Abbie Barnwell took gold in the 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle along with the 200m and 400m IM.

She also claimed won silver in the 50m breaststroke and 200m backstroke plus bronze in the 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke and 100m butterfly.

The Team Luton swimmers are now training to improve on their long course county times to qualify for the ASA Nationals and the English Championships in July and August.
