REVIEW: The Walking Dead – Episode One

Do you remember when those point and click games were all the rage?

Leisure Suit Larry pulled out his inneundos and made everyone giggle as they gawped in disbelief at digital nudity.

Sam and Max dropped jaws with hilarious writing and mind-bending puzzles which were hilarious for other reasons and most recently games like Broken Sword, Monkey Island HD and Sword and Sworcery EP have proven there is life in the genre albeit with major gameplay tweaks and The Walking Dead is no exception.

What we have here is a game similar in genre to those mentioned before but with a slight twist.

Here you directly control the main protagonist who, for the series, is completely brand new and offers a new take on the storyline concurrent with the TV show and comic book.

You play as someone you know as Lee and is travelling along the motorway for reasons best left for you to discover and after some very interesting character building you find yourself plowing into the games first zombie and taking a detour into a nearby ditch.

It’s from here on you start to realise that you’re completely on your own and while the game funnels you down a pretty narrow path it’s completely up to you how to interact with the other survivors through means of branching dialogue.

Do you tell the innocent child why her parents aren’t coming back or do you shield her from the truth? Do you tell the strangers who you really are or does it really matter any more now that the world has seemingly gone to hell.

It’s a gripping ride from beginning to end (of Episode One) and is a complete bargain of a price.

The game is on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 and while the pricing models may vary, each episode works out at about £4 and for two hours entertainment per episode that’s definitely nothing to be scoffed at.

The game unfortunately suffers from a lot of stuttering during gameplay but never really impedes on your ability to play the game and the controls will need some getting used to when it comes to the action heavy moments but the game is very forgiving when it comes to reloading your save.

Definitely check out this game if you’re a fan of either the TV or comic books and even if you’re not, it could well pull you into this world which is one of the most realised zombie-pocalypse worlds to date.8/10
